In Isaiah 40 we find the beginning of promises that were for God’s people.  Israel was tired and almost at a place where they felt like all hope was gone.  They were suffering because of Assyrians forces and began to wonder if God had abandoned them.  They literally felt they had no way out.  An inspired Isaiah drives this point home in Isaiah 40:27-31.

Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the Lord, And my just claim is passed over by my God”? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?  The everlasting God, the Lord,  The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.  29 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.  30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

I love everything about the text in Isaiah 40.  I love it for me now but I also love the fact that it was a word for God's people while they were yet in a place of worry and fear.  It was a word for them while they were IN their struggle.  It required their faith.

The Hebrew culture referenced eagles often to highlight characteristics of those that were caring, strong, visionary, courageous, and faithful.  The Lord even spoke of eagles in Exodus 19 when he gave Moses a message for the people and said, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles; wings and brought you to myself.”

Isaiah is communicating to these tired, worn down, chosen people that if you can keep on and stay focused, you will not finish in brokenness, you will finish in victory.  You will ‘mount up’ with wings like eagles and soar.  The Hebrew for the phrase ‘mount up’ simply means to “go up” or “ascend over a boundary.”

This Independence Day, the boundaries of life and struggles should not hinder the child of God.  Worries and fear of tomorrow are not for us.  He has promised that our strength would come from Him and that we would be able to soar ABOVE the trial on wings like eagles.  Fly above the clouds… spread your wings and soar like an eagle to a place of freedom.
